Sin City

While I normally advocate reading the book before seeing the movie, in the case of Sin City, I’m not sure it matters much. The two are so closely intertwined that rather than being a reinterpretation of the book, the movie is a retelling in a different medium. I think this has never been done before, but there’s now Sin City (the book) and Sin City (the movie), and the experience isn’t complete without both of them.

Sin City itself played with interpretation of time - the stories are reasonably timeless in themselves, but also disjoint in time with respect to the other stories. As the movie depicts very well, characters, and sometimes dead characters, from one act are always sitting in the background of (or sometimes narrating) the chapter you’re experiencing now. In a similar vein, scenes from the stories in the books show up in the stories in the movies. Maybe you’ve read it before or seen it before, but that doesn’t matter, because there’s more to tell.

It’s an interesting experiment, and it really works for me.

There’s plenty to say about the books themselves, but I really think they need to be experienced firsthand. They’re violent, brutal, beautiful, stark, and unquestionably unlike anything else. If nothing else, they won’t bore you.

There are seven books total - the link is to the first one.

Friday Sale - All-Clad 7.5″ Frypan

Product Image: All-Clad LTD 7.5

I love All-Clad. Although I don’t have this particular model, a small frypan is kind of a no-brainer. At $20 from the Friday Sale, this is the time to get a few of them to give away as gifts.

All All-Clad pans I’ve used heat very evenly, handle well, and are durable. If you need a small frying pan, you can’t go wrong with this one. Use it for browning a small amount of chopped onions, one or two eggs, or melting butter if you don’t have a small saucepan handy.

The uber coffee machine - Coffee Team Luxe

March 30th, 2005
Product Image: Capresso Coffee Team Luxe
My rating: 5 out of 5

It’s pricey, but it makes great coffee, and there’s nothing like having a fresh pot ready when you wake up. It grinds with a burr grinder immediately before brewing, so you get the freshest cup possible. It really makes a difference, and I find this far preferable (cheaper and more convenient) to going to a coffee shop every morning.

Before settling on this one, I also tried the Cuisinart auto-grind model, and was unsatisfied with that, to my surprise (I’m very happy with most of the other Cuisinart tools I have). It used a blade grinder, and wound up with a lot more fine coffee dust. It was harder to clean, but most importantly, it made a much weaker cup. The Capresso succeeds in being able to make a full pot that’s almost as strong as I like it (and it’s perfect if I do 8 cups of water to 10 cups of coffee).

I was recently reminded of just how much I love this machine, when I was separated from it for a whole five days (the heating coil burned out after about six years of everyday use, and the entire machine was replaced by Capresso very quickly for a nominal fraction of the cost). Thumbs up to Capresso for stellar customer service.

Great Anime - Cowboy Bebop

Product Image: Cowboy Bebop - The Movie
My rating: 5 out of 5

I’m a big fan of anime, but I’m also very particular. That is, there are a few titles that I like, and those I really like. I can leave the rest. Cowboy Bebop is one of the great ones.

Spike is a bounty hunter. His partner is Jet, an ex-cop. They have some companions - Faye, Edward (a little girl), and a dog named Ein. They’re martial arts experts, they have space ships, and they save the world to great music. The pacing is solid, the characters are interesting, the action is great, and the animation is haunting and delectable.

This is the movie - there are also six discs of the series. If you think you might watch the whole thing, watch those first. They introduce the characters and follow the broad story arc. The movie takes place somewhere in the middle of the series timeline, but can stand on its own if you’re not going to watch the whole series.

Friday Sale - Breville Juice Machine

March 25th, 2005
Product Image: Breville Juice Fountain Professional Juice Extractor
My rating: 4 out of 5

I have this juice machine, and I like it a lot.

It makes short work of most fruits and vegetables (you can juice pineapple without removing the skin), works very fast, has a very wide feed tube and has a pulp ejector for continuous jucing. The pulp ejector also lets you save the pulp if you want it for cooking (carrot cake) or composting. It is a very good value for a powerful juicer.

There are two drawbacks I’ve found. The seal on the pulp container isn’t perfect, so after long usage, there’s a small line of very fine pulp spray on the back of my counter. Also, it sounds like a jet engine taking off. Very powerful, but this sucker is loud.
