As a friend of First Adopter Extraordinaire Adam, I’ve frequently bought or been given items that he’s grown out of. I got my first DVD player this way. Even when he’s letting them go for something better, they’re always pretty damn good (even years later) because he researches this stuff to death before he buys anything. When passing over an item, he usually tells me more than I would ever have thought to wonder. I have been wondering for years how he finds the time to do all this research, comparison shop, then actually learn to get so much functionality out of so many different tools, gadgets, appliances, foods, bags… etc. ad infinitum. The DVD player was, as he reported, excellent except for the remote. I didn’t think I’d mind that at all, but every word of his gripe against it proved to be dead on. That’s just one simple example. For years now I haven’t bought anything more expensive than $200 (except my car and my house) without consulting him first. I can’t imagine getting done as a job what he does as a weird kind of hobby. But then, I don’t have to. I just ask Adam, and now you can, too.
